Summer Soltice Festival

The mountain's burning!. Summer soltice festival and bonfire on the Markbachjoch in the Wildschönau

The summer soltice is traditionally celebrated by lighting bonfires on the mountain tops.

Lighting bonfires at midsummer comes from an ancient Christian tradition dating from the middle ages.
During Christianisation many of these old rites were forbidden and the summer soltice was replaced by the Feast of St John the Baptist. However the bonfire tradtion survived and is still kept today. Local people, clubs and societies in the whole of the Tyrol light bonfires at midsummer on the mountain tops creating a chain of light that is fascinating to see.
