Krautinger Week in the Wildschönau
Krautinger Week - a culinary and musical highlight in the Wildschönau from 5th to 11th October 2008
The Krautinger Week from 5th to 11th October dedicated to the Wildschönau's unique cure-all, Krautinger Schnapps, will convince non believers that the valley's hallmark is not only for medicinal purposes.
The white beet used to make the famous schnapps was the reason that the Wildschönau was awarded the coveted 'Genuss Region' or enjoyment region title. The enjoyment regions market particularly high quality local products, in our case this white beet.
We celebrate our unique beet during the Krautinger Week.
Sunday 5th October
The week begins with a harvest festival after a church service and procession in Oberau. The Z'Bach Mountain Farmer's Museum is turned into a little market place for the day and musical accompaniment is a given, as usual. Culinary specialities are provided by the local farmer's wives and a craft fare and farmer's market take place as well. traditional appearances by the local brass bands and the ancient rifle troop, the Wildschönau Sturmlöda make for an atmospheric event.
Delicious Beet Specialities
As well as the schnapps, the beet is a well loved ingredient in many local delicacies. Throughout the week you will find dishes made from the white beet on the menues in many local hotels and restaurants, such as beet soup, beet dumplings or a beet salad, as a side dish to smoked trout filet, beet ravioli, beet strudel with cream of pumpkin sauce, fried pike with beet ragout and many more delicious recipes.
Visit one of the farming families who still produce the traditional schnapps or take part in one of the guided walks, or concerts organised for the Krautinger Week.
Saturday 11th October
The highlight of the Krautinger Week is the Krautinger Ball in Z'Bach Museum. The famous local band the Ebbser Kaiserklang will be playing and the year's best schnapps will be chosen by a panel of expert judges. A glass will certainly be raised to her Majesty, the Empress Maria Theresia by whose decree 51 Wildschönau farmers received the unique rights to Krautinger distillery in the 17th century. The schnapps is distilled exclusively in the Wildschönau by royal decree! 15 farmers still produce the schnapps today.
