Schönanger Alm
Johann Schönauer from the Schönanger Dairy is a well-known cheese maker.
This high pasture is the pride of 25 local farmers from the Wildschönau. The whole Schönanger area is 680 hectars with three grazing pastures or 'alms' providing summer grazing for about 260 head of cattle between June and September.
A daily yield of 2000 litres of milk is processed into butter and cheese. You can watch the award winning cheese maker Johann Schönauer at work in the dairy making his specialities; Alm cheese, Emmentaler, Camembert, Tilsiter or herb cheese. The products are all sold directly from the alm. Johann is the proud winner of 2 gold and one silver medals from the Cheese Olympics!
