Specialities
Original Tirolean cuisine is well loved in the Wildschönau. Characteristic for these dishes are the locally produced foods that are used. Ingredients like; fruit and vegetables, butter, cream and curds, homecured bacon, lean meat directly from the farm, game, kitchen herbs, jams and honey.
For a snack they used freshly baked bread from a wood heated oven, the recipe for which has been handed down for generations. The cheeses are from the local dairy, the best loved of which are the Wildschönau Alp cheese, the 'Graukäse' and the Camembert.
A very special local Wildschönau delicacy is without doubt the Krautinger Schnapps. This schnapps is distilled from white beet and is made exclusively here in the Wildschönau by royal decree. Local people and in the meantime their guests as well, swear by the properties of the Krautinger Schnapps as a cure-all for any kind of stomach upset. The white beet is used in a variety of other ways too in the Tirolean kitchen. You can have beet soup, beet salad or even a beet cake.
Other schnapps and fine liqueurs are distilled here too from berries and fruits and can be tasted and purchased at various locations.
Freshly made pasties and doughnut with either sweet or spicy filling are very popular with locals and guests alike. You can taste some of these at the regular Farmers Market in Oberau. If you prefer a hearty meal, try a 'Breznsuppe' - (almost like a french onion soup) or 'Kasspatzeln' (like gnocchi with cheese) and to finish off a dessert of 'Moosbeernockerl' (blueberry fritters).
