There are many herbalists here in the Wildschönau. Some gather herbs growing wild while others cultivate their own herb gardens.
The magic of a farm garden.
The farm garden has always been the revier of the hard working farmer's wife. The farm garden was not only a provider of basic foods, vitamins, healing herbs and spices but also the pride and joy of many a farmer's wife. Two farms in particular in the Wildschönau have specialised in the cultivation of herbal remedies.
Christine Thaler from the Holzalm Farm in Oberau at 1100m has a wonderful herb garden with over 80 different herbs. The valuable plants are made into all kinds of remedies, creams and tinctures. The herbs are sold directly from the farm or in the Farmer'S Shop in Oberau. Christl is also a talented painter and her work can be seen in a particularly attractive background on the Holzalm Farm. Holzalm is also the herb garden that we visit on our guided walk, 'On the herbal trail' every Tuesday.

"Close your eyes and concentrate on the scents, the buzzing of the bees and the birdsong." - visitors to Birgit Haas' Herbal Garden on the Hintersalcher Farm in Auffach are greeted in this way. And what she has to show you is fascinating.
Birgit's garden is 700m² and worked soley by hand. The colours and scents of the flowers and herbs are wonderful enough but Birgit's tips and secrets make this a fascinating place to visit.
