Ski Resort
The Wildschönau ski area is varied and has something for every level of skier.
The north facing slopes, Lanerköpfl and Markbachjoch in Niederau were developed into ski slopes in 1947. An adventurous attempt at a single chair lift stood where today the highly modern 8-man gondola transports hundreds of guests daily to the top of the Markbachjoch. The Kropfrader and Mittermooser lifts are easier slopes on the wide ridge at the top but the runs through the woods into the village, Hochberg, Stöck and Sixtwiesen range from dark red to deep black and only for experienced skiers. The Märchenwiesen Valley run is the only one where snow cannons can be used and it is classed as a red run.
The runs on the Schatzberg in Auffach, the larger Wildschönau ski area, are a little more placid. The terrain is more open and the runs wider. Beginners, families and snowboarders feel comfortable here on the sunny skiing-motorways. Off piste there is a mogul piste here and there and powder slopes. If you want to ski from top to bottom, you should be in quite good form as the run is a red and is 10km long.
In Oberau there are 5 drags mostly for beginners with one short black run on the Riedl slope.
