The path divides here. A little below this point at around 1750 m, the stones for building the church were blasted out of the rock and brought down to the valley. A major fire in 1719 almost completely destroyed the church and the village centre of Oberau. According to legend, for decades people brought stones with them every time they went to church to contribute to the building of the new church. The path to his girl’s heart may not have been quite so difficult for most young men of the time but could definitely be described as rocky in more ways than one!
