Achentalalm-Kragenjoch

The Kragenjoch has a lot to offer.
At first glance, the summit seems rather unremarkable, but once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with a surprisingly sweeping panorama. Moreover, the Kragenjoch is a special mountain for the Wildschönau region: it’s composed of limestone, which is reflected in an extraordinary variety of herbs and flowers. From the village center in Oberau, the trail first leads along the Minzweg toward Boarstadl. You then hike leisurely along a forest road to the Achentalalm—a stop here is definitely worth it. After that comes the final ascent: passing the picturesque Georg Chapel, moderately steep trails lead across lush green alpine meadows and flowering slopes up to the summit.
Once you reach the Kragenjoch, the summit cross and bench invite you to take a well-deserved break. From here, the view sweeps over the highest mountains of the Wildschönau, into the Brixental valley, toward the Wilder Kaiser, and all the way to Kufstein Fortress. The return route leads through an unspoiled forest with beautiful valley views back toward Oberau—past the Zwecklhof, which is known for its schnapps specialties.

By the way, the rustic Achentalalm is known for its delicious specialties: During the summer months, traditional "Schmalznudeln" are served every Wednesday. "Brettljause" and "Kaiserschmarrn" are available daily from June through September.

Tip: A hike to the Kragenjoch at sunrise is a truly special experience.
