Traditional advent season in tyrol

Advent in the Wildschönau

Advent has a very special magic in Wildschönau. Away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping streets, a soothing tranquility descends on the high valley, and the whole region gets into the spirit of the most wonderful time of the year. This is particularly atmospheric during a walk along the Wildschönau Nativity Trail, where lovingly designed nativity scenes awaken the anticipation of Christmas. Another highlight is the Family Advent in the Drachental valley – an experience for young and old alike.

Crib trail

During Advent, elaborate nativity scenes are displayed in showcases along the St. Francis Path trail. The first is located at the Mountain Farm Museum, with others following at regular intervals towards Oberau.

The nativity scenes were designed by the "Krippenfreunde Wildschönau" (Wildschönau Nativity Scene Friends) under the direction of Thomas Breitenlechner. The St. Francis Path is cleared regularly and is perfect for a winter walk.

All nativity sc
enes are illuminated and can be viewed from December 1st to Candlemas on February 2nd.

Advent traditions

The "Anklöpfler" of Wildschönau

A very special custom in the Tyrolean Unterinntal valley is Anklöpfeln. During the pre-Christmas period, groups of men dressed as shepherds go from house to house and proclaim the Christmas message in song.

For their atmospheric performance, the Anklöpfler are traditionally rewarded with Christmas cookies or a snack – and in Wildschönau, Krautinger wine is of course a must. The donations collected go to social causes.

Anklöpfeln has been practiced for generations and is passed on as a valuable part of the Unterinntal cultural heritage.

Tradition made of wood

Village cribs

In the villages of Oberau, Auffach, and Thierbach, you can view large nativity scenes created by wood artists. The idyllic village of Thierbach offers what is arguably the most beautiful backdrop for a village nativity scene.

More events in the advent

During Advent, Wildschönau shows its contemplative yet lively side. Numerous events revive old traditions and get everyone in the mood for Christmas:  The Wildschönau krampus assosiation and the Wildschönau witches dance provide devilish experiences that delight with their mystical atmosphere. At the Christmas concert “ENDTON”, festive music gives you goosebumps before the Wildschönau Anklöpfler announce the Christmas message with their songs.

The evening mass in the parish church of Oberau, organized by the men's choir and accompanied by Anklöpflern, creates space for silence and reflection. For families, the Advent hike with children offers an atmospheric opportunity to experience the magic of this special time together.

A varied program that combines music, customs, and tradition—and makes the Advent season in Wildschönau an unforgettable experience.
