6. Markbachjoch Runde
A ride that never disappoints.
If you start in Oberau, you first ride into the Roggenboden district and toward the Oberau “Sonnberg.” From the Hotel Silberberger the climb really begins (4 km, 440 m elevation gain). However, the route rewards you with wonderful views into the back Wildschönau valley and toward the Inn Valley, and you can admire many old, beautifully maintained farmhouses. This mountainside (northwest-facing) is at its most beautiful in the afternoon.
From the Horlerstiegl (a chapel from the 18th century), you switch to the other side of the Markbachjoch (southeast-facing) and continue on to the Holzalm. Shortly afterwards you reach the hiking trail. Since this trail is heavily used by hikers in summer, it’s best to walk your bike along this section.
Once you reach the plateau of the Markbachjoch, you can relax and enjoy: great food, panoramic views, and the anticipation of a 700-meter descent down to Pesendorf/Niederau.
A shorter option is the loop starting in Niederau, following route no. 353 from Niederau toward the Norderbergalm and then down from the Markbachjoch toward Pesendorf/Niederau.
Places to stop for refreshments: Aparthotel Talhof am Roggenboden, Holzalm/Käsealm, Markbachjochalm, Rübezahlhütte, or Norderbergalm, all located at Markbachjoch in Niederau, as well as numerous inns and cafés in the village of Niederau.
