The Wildschönau is one of the loveliest ski mountaineering areas in the Kitzbühel Alps. The high valley is an open secret in ski mountaineering circles, not yet overrun by keen fans of this popular sport. The particular appeal of the area lies in the tranquility and remoteness long forgotten in other lareger regions.
On the highest peak in the Wildschönau, the Grosser Beil at 2300 Meter the views are reward enough for the strenuous climb. The descent is a combination of demanding slopes and gentle hills.
Popular ski touring routes are: The Breitegg-Gern, Grosser Beil/ Sonnjoch and the Lämpersberg. The start of these tours is the Schönanger Alm at the end of the valley.
For novices the tour to the Gern Alm on the Schatzberg is ideal.
The golden rule for this winter sport is to always be informed about the latest avalanche danger scale and alpine weather forecast for your chosen route and to have the correct equipment with you at all times (shovel, avalanche beeper and avalanche probe). Sufficient food and drink goes without saying in case there are no huts nearby.
