Gratlspitz Bike Tour
Challenging tour to the neighboring Alpbach Valley
This tour gets straight down to business from the start.
If you begin in Mühltal, the first part involves a lot of climbing and little chance to relax. Up to Thierbach and the turnoff at the Schatzberg towards Alpbach, you’ll pedal over 900 m of elevation gain across almost 10 km.
The reward, however, comes immediately afterwards: an 800 m descent over nearly 8 km, past the Zottahof farm, down into the village of Alpbach. Alpbach is famous for its traditional architectural style, which is consistent throughout the entire valley. Beautiful views along the route provide plenty of motivation – and you’ll need it on this tour.
From there, it’s just under 700 m of climbing over 8.5 km up to the Brixlegger Holzalm. MTB Route 308 begins right at the sharp left-hand bend in the middle of the village – past Hotel Post and straight ahead. Many hairpin bends follow up to the Bischofer Alm and continue until you reach the north side of the Gratlspitze, then through the forest to the Holzalm (tip: try the Kaiserschmarrn!).
After the Holzalm comes a short, tricky section where you need to push your bike.
Than, it’s almost entirely downhill – with a brief uphill just before Thierbach – down to the church in Thierbach and back to the starting point.
Places to stop for refreshments: Schatzbergalm, Brixlegger Holzalm, Traditionsgasthof Sollererwirt, or Gasthof Gradlspitz in Thierbach, as well as other inns and cafés in Mühltal, Oberau and Niederau.
