Schatzberg Tour
The perfect mix of uphill challenge, alpine beauty, and pure downhill joy — a must do in the Wildschönau.
The tour starts at the Schatzberg cable car station in Auffach.
First, follow the road uphill towards Thierbach for about 5 km. Upon reaching the picturesque village of Thierbach, turn left towards Schatzberg just after the elementary school.
From there, a forest road climbs approximately 6 km through woodland and alpine pastures to the upper station of the Schatzberg lift.
If you enjoy combining physical activity with scenic cycling and good food, this is the perfect tour for you.
There are several places to stop for refreshments on Schatzberg, including the Schatzbergalm and, a little higher up, the Gipföhütte.
On clear days, the panoramic views from the ridge around Hahnkopf stretch from the Karwendel Mountains to the Hohe Tauern and the Wilder Kaiser range. Simply breathtaking—take your time and enjoy it!
From there, the route descends steeply to the reservoir, passes the Gern Alm, and continues down via a newly created section to the Grasing Alm.
WARNING – STEEP DESCENT!
Due to the steep gradient and technical difficulty of this section, it is not recommended to ride it with a child trailer or with a child seated on a rear bicycle seat.
Extra caution is also advised on the forest road that leads via the Talsalm into the Aschbach Valley, as it is somewhat steeper and rougher, with loose gravel in places.
Nevertheless, a rush of endorphins is guaranteed. After all, the return to Auffach takes you nearly 1,000 vertical metres downhill over a distance of more than 9 km—a truly exhilarating descent back into the valley.
