As you hike, you’ll experience our distinctive high valley, the sweeping views, and the unique play of colors, as if nature had prepared everything for you on a lovingly arranged plate. This doesn’t require countless meters of elevation gain or long walking times.
With breathtaking views, an atmospheric sunrise, or the scent of fragrant alpine meadows, you can already get a taste of Wildschönau’s culinary delights.
Schatzberg round hiking trail # 1
Simply wow - sometimes there are hardly any words to describe a moment that’s so impressive. That’s exactly what awaits you here: a priceless moment of pure enjoyment with a spectacular 360° panoramic view. From the Zillertal to the Berchtesgaden Alps, from the Großglockner to the Wilder Kaiser - and everything in between. Simply breathtaking. Best of all: This viewpoint is easily accessible via the Schatzberg cable car. The loop trail, with an elevation gain of only about 160 meters of elevation gain, is also ideal for families and offers unforgettable experiences that will stay with you for a long time to come.
A little tip: If you're not quite done yet, you can extend the loop hike into a summit hike to the Gern or Joel.

Be sure to stop by the Schatzbergalm or the Gipfö Hit. Both mountain huts will treat you to specialties, some of which are prepared using produce from their own farms.
Schatzbergalm’s culinary highlight: The Almburger, served with a hearty side dish like crispy fries, is just the thing to recharge your energy after a hike.
Gipfö Hit’s culinary highlight: The hut salad with tender strips of beef is the perfect snack for in between meals.
Alpine pasture tour over the Rosskopf
Moments of pure bliss really do exist. Standing in the middle of an alpine pasture, closing your eyes, and taking a deep breath—now you can almost smell it: the unmistakable scent of the alpine pasture. The blooming meadows surrounding the Holzalm, the Roßkopf, and the Norderbergeralm give the regional specialties their unique flavor. The aroma of the herbs and alpine flowers is reflected in the products from the alpine pastures. Here, the finest alpine milk is used to make cheese that tastes like authentic Wildschönau.
The gentle grassy mountains, the Roßkopf, and the idyllic meadows around the Halsgatterl are a feast for the eyes—especially in the early morning hours or in the atmospheric evening sun.
Tips for refreshment
Holzalm’s Culinary Tip: The Holzalm is known for its excellent dairy and cheese products. Treat yourself to some fresh buttermilk and a hearty Brettljause, and—from mid-June through early September—take a look behind the scenes on one of the weekly cheese-making tours.
Norderbergalm's Culinary Tip: Before heading back to the Markbachjochbahn, it’s worth stopping by the Norderbergalm. Enjoy homemade Schlutzkrapfen with brown butter and fresh salad, along with the magnificent view.
Koglweg Thierbach family trail
Thierbach makes the dream of an idyllic church village come true. The smallest village in the Wildschönau and also the highest-altitude settlement in the Kitzbühel Alps charms visitors with its traditional farms, a small church, and plenty of charm - small, quaint, and wonderfully peaceful. A place to arrive and take a deep breath. At the same time, Thierbach is the starting point for your circular hike. With the striking Gratlspitze in the background, the trail leads out of the village and into the forest. Along the way, rest stops, the “energy tree,” and a forest playground invite you to linger.

At the Sollererwirt and the Gasthof Gradlspitz in the village, you can treat yourself to special culinary delights—whether sweet pastries or traditional Tyrolean cuisine. Both establishments have close ties to the Wildschönau region and its local heritage and look back on a long history in the village.
Sollererwirt's Waidmannsruh“Speckbacher-Pfandl”—pan-fried pork medallions served over ham-and-cream spaetzle, garnished with crispy pork belly. Enjoy this dish in the authentically preserved Speckbacherstube.
Gradlspitz culinary highlight: Bacon bread with house-smoked bacon—Chef Josef still smokes the bacon himself.
Mühltal round hiking trail
Sometimes that’s exactly what you need: a leisurely stroll through the village - not too far, not too steep. Just walk, relax, and take it all in. You’ll immediately notice the traditional architectural style of the farmhouses. Stop for a moment, and you’ll feel the character of this place. Our farms look back on a long history, telling countless family stories and how nature continues to shape life in the Wildschönau to this day. The timber construction, small windows, firewood by the door, flowers, and lovingly tended farm gardens are no coincidence—they’re a testament to craftsmanship and a love for the region.
The small hamlet of Mühltal belongs to Oberau and in summer is the “gateway to the Kundl gorge” - one of Austria’s most beautiful natural gorges. From Mühltal, you can reach the Kundler Klamm either on foot or quite comfortably by scenic train.
Tips for refreshment
Waidmannsruh's culinary tip: Located right at the entrance to the Kundler Klamm, it’s the perfect spot for a cozy break. If you love pastries, you absolutely must try the homemade Kaiserschmarr’n.
Schweizerhof's culinary tip: If you prefer hearty fare, be sure to try the “à la Andrea” steak toast. Music lovers can look forward to the weekly concerts by the Mühltal brass band in the summer.
